This month aims to increase the early detection of breast cancer by educating and encouraging women to have mammograms. Breast cancer is a disease in which cells in the breast grow without regulation and eventually out of control. It is the most common cancer among American women; around 1 in 8 US women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. However, preventative care and screenings are recommended throughout the US. Finding breast cancer early makes it easier to treat.
The most common preventative screening for breast cancer is mammograms. How often and when someone should start the screen varies, so it’s best to talk with a healthcare professional about what is best. Generally, people can start getting mammograms at age 40. From age 50 to 74, the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends that people with an average risk of breast cancer be screened every two years. Biennial screening can continue past 74, but it is largely up to the individual to decide based on personal risks.
Here are screening timeline comparisons between the top medical organizations in the US.
Breast cancer treatment varies based on the kind of breast cancer and how far it has spread. Treatment options include surgery, chemotherapy, hormonal, biological, and radiation therapies. Each treatment has its own set of risks and side effects. For instance, chemotherapy treatments may make nails more brittle and sensitive to the chemicals in typical nail polishes.
How DEMIblue is Supporting Breast Cancer Awareness Month
DEMIblue started in 2018 after our founder’s mother was in the remission stages from breast cancer. Upon learning that many cosmetics contain potentially toxic chemicals harmful to cancer patients receiving treatment, Michelle Robinson decided to create DEMIblue, a nontoxic and vegan nail polish brand. Complete with 21-free nail polish colors and acetone-free nail polish remover, DEMIblue’s formulation offers a healthy and safe product for all individuals.
This month, we are featuring two unique, limited-time sets for the survivor in your life. Check out the Juliet Box and the Survivor Duo (with our color of the month, Pink Panties). A portion of the proceeds will go to community organizations focused on the fight against Breast Cancer. In support of all breast cancer survivors, DEMIblue is honoring survivors with the tag #demibluecares this month by hosting shoutouts and giveaways. Check out our website to learn more.
