How to Take Care of Your Nails in Fall and Winter

Winter is coming, and now that the weather is starting to cool and the leaves are starting to fall, it also means that the air is turning dryer and the wind is becoming harsher. The change in seasons can have a noticeable effect on your nails. Cold weather is often drying; the same can be said about nails. Peeling and splitting nails may occur, as can subsequent infections that get in due to damage to the nail plate. Here are some tips to keep your nails hydrated and healthy this winter!

Moisturize your hands

The skin around your nails is essential as well. Keeping them hydrated will aid in locking moisture in the cuticles and strengthen the nails. Use creams and oils on hands (lotion is water-based and may dry out hands even more). Also, make sure to hydrate with moisturizer or hand cream after washing your hands.

Apply cuticle oil

On a related note, applying cuticle oil can help keep nails moisturized. Cuticles are the little patch of skin at the base of the nail, where your nail plate starts to grow, so hydrating them directly can also help prevent brittleness and dry nails. Keeping the cuticle hydrated also protects your nail bed from damage, preventing bacteria from entering the nail bed.

Clip dry nails while wet

If your nails are dry and brittle, try cutting them when wet to minimize splitting. Water softens the nails and makes them more pliable. If filing nails, go from the edges in. While hard nails are good, you want tough but still flexible nails.

Wear nail polish

Nail polish can actually help create a barrier between outside factors like water and your nail. Make sure you apply a base coat and a top coat to maximum effect. Additionally, removing nail polish with a non-acetone remover prevents your nails from being dried out by the acetone in other removers.

Try a nail treatment

Nail treatments help strengthen nails by adding vitamins and nutrients. They can also help keep nails flexible and bendable, reducing cracking and breakage.

In conclusion, protection and hydration are critical in the winter months.
